About the Client

Maidah — London’s First Dedicated Halal Food Platform

Maidah (Arabic: مائدة — meaning “The Table Spread”, a reference to Surah Al-Ma’idah in the Quran) is a London-based food technology company with a singular vision: to become the definitive digital home for the UK’s halal food community. The platform serves two distinct audiences simultaneously — halal food consumers seeking trusted restaurant discovery and loyalty rewards, and halal restaurant owners seeking a powerful digital tool to attract, engage, and retain customers.

The name itself carries deep cultural resonance. Al-Ma’idah in Islamic tradition refers to the blessed table — a concept of abundance, community, and sharing a meal. This etymology is not incidental. Maidah was built from the ground up to feel culturally authentic to the Muslim community it serves — not a generic food app with a halal filter bolted on, but a platform designed with the values, language, and dining habits of Muslim consumers at its core.

Smitiv was brought in to architect and build the entire platform — the consumer-facing iOS and Android apps, the restaurant dashboard, the NFC loyalty infrastructure, the offers engine, and the geo-location discovery layer — from the ground up.

Love halal food. Love rewards. Love Maidah. We wanted to build something that felt genuinely made for the halal food community — not a workaround on an existing platform, but a home built specifically for them.
— Maidah App Limited, London

Market Opportunity

A Massive, Underserved Market Right in London

The UK halal food market is one of the fastest-growing segments in the British food and beverage industry — and London is its undisputed epicentre. Despite the scale of the market, Muslim food consumers had no dedicated digital discovery and loyalty platform before Maidah. This was the gap Smitiv helped close.

The Challenge

Two Audiences. One Platform. No Blueprint.

Building Maidah was not a simple app development brief. It was a dual-sided marketplace problem — requiring Smitiv to simultaneously solve the needs of two very different user groups whose value to the platform is interdependent. More restaurants means more consumer value. More consumers means more restaurant value. Getting both sides live and active at the same time is one of the hardest problems in consumer tech.

Consumer Challenges

  • No trusted halal restaurant discovery tool. Before Maidah, Muslim food lovers had to use generic apps like Google Maps or Yelp and manually verify halal status — an unreliable, time-consuming process with no standardised halal certification display.
  • Loyalty cards were fragmented and paper-based. Every halal restaurant ran its own paper stamp card — kept in wallets, lost regularly, and impossible to track across multiple restaurants without physical cards for each.
  • No central offers platform for the halal community. Halal-specific deals and promotions were scattered across individual restaurant social media accounts, WhatsApp groups, and word of mouth — there was no aggregated offers destination.
  • Culturally generic digital experiences. Existing food apps were not designed with Muslim consumers in mind — no halal certification filters, no prayer time awareness, no culturally resonant branding or language.

Restaurant Challenges

  • Halal restaurants were invisible to new Muslim customers online. Most halal restaurants lacked the digital presence, SEO, or platform visibility to reach Muslim consumers actively searching for halal food in their area.
  • No affordable customer retention tool. Building a branded loyalty app independently costs tens of thousands of pounds — far beyond the budget of independent halal restaurants. Generic SaaS loyalty tools lacked halal-specific features and cultural alignment.
  • No direct digital marketing channel to Muslim consumers. Restaurants had no way to push offers, promotions, or new menu items to a targeted audience of halal food lovers in their area.
  • Dual-sided marketplace cold start problem. Building a platform that needed both consumers AND restaurants active before either side found value — a classic chicken-and-egg problem that requires precise sequencing and incentive design to solve.

⚙️
The Technical Challenge
Build a dual-sided marketplace on iOS and Android simultaneously, with NFC hardware integration, geo-location, a custom CMS for restaurant management, push notification segmentation, and a branded loyalty card engine — all to production quality, on a fixed budget.
🧲
The Market Challenge
Launch a two-sided platform in a market with no existing category — requiring simultaneous onboarding of restaurants and consumers, with enough value on each side to drive adoption before network effects naturally took over.
🕌
The Cultural Challenge
Design and build a product that feels genuinely made for the Muslim community — not a generic app with a halal label. Every design decision, from the name to the NFC mechanic to the halal status display, needed to resonate authentically with the target audience.

The Technology Innovation

NFC Tap-to-Stamp — Frictionless Loyalty at the Table

The centrepiece of Maidah’s loyalty system is its NFC (Near Field Communication) tap-to-stamp mechanic — a genuinely novel approach to restaurant loyalty that removes every friction point from the stamp collection experience. Rather than paper cards, QR scanning, or till-side interactions, Maidah customers simply tap their phone against a Maidah-branded NFC device placed at the counter or table. The stamp is recorded instantly.

This design decision was deliberate and consequential. In a dining context, speed and elegance matter. A customer should be able to collect a loyalty stamp without interrupting their meal, without waiting for staff assistance, and without needing anything other than the app already open on their phone. Smitiv engineered the NFC integration to meet this standard — with sub-second stamp confirmation and a satisfying in-app animation to mark each collection.

Step 01

📱

Open the Maidah App
Customer opens the Maidah app and navigates to the central “M” button — accessible from any screen within the app with a single tap. No login required if already authenticated.

Step 02

📡

Tap Against Maidah Device
Customer holds their phone against the Maidah NFC device in the restaurant. The NFC chip reads the restaurant’s unique identifier and triggers the stamp collection flow in real time — no internet connection required for the tap itself.

Step 03

Stamp Collected — Instantly
A confirmation notification appears immediately. The stamp is added to the customer’s digital loyalty card for that restaurant. When the card is full, the reward is automatically unlocked and ready to redeem on the next visit.

The NFC mechanic solves three problems simultaneously: it eliminates the need for staff involvement in the loyalty process, it prevents fraud (each NFC device is restaurant-specific and cryptographically authenticated), and it creates a moment of delight — tapping your phone and watching a stamp appear is a satisfying interaction that paper cards simply cannot replicate. This innovation is what gives Maidah a technical moat that generic loyalty apps cannot easily copy.

Consumer Features

Six Features Built for Halal Food Lovers

The Maidah consumer app was designed to become the single destination for everything a halal food lover needs — before, during, and after their dining experience. Here’s what Smitiv built into the consumer experience.

🔍

Consumer 01
Geo-Located Restaurant Discovery
The core of the consumer experience. Using device location services, Maidah surfaces halal restaurants near the user in real time — sorted by proximity, open status, and cuisine type. Each restaurant listing displays key information: halal certification status, opening hours, cuisine type, current offers, and direct Google Maps integration for navigation. The discovery feed updates dynamically as new restaurant partners join the platform.
🔎

Consumer 02
Advanced Search & Cuisine Filtering
Users can search by restaurant name, cuisine category (burgers, Korean, Lebanese, pizza, Asian street food, and more), halal certification level (fully halal vs halal options), and distance radius. This filtering system is critical — the halal food community is diverse, with consumers from dozens of cultural backgrounds each seeking different cuisines prepared according to Islamic dietary law. The filtering engine serves all of them precisely.
💳

Consumer 03
Digital Loyalty Wallet
Every Maidah user has a digital loyalty wallet — a centralised hub containing their loyalty cards for every Maidah partner restaurant they’ve visited. Each card shows the restaurant’s branding, the number of stamps collected, the total stamps needed for a reward, and what the reward is. Rewards are available from the very first purchase cycle — meaning new users see value from their first visit. The wallet eliminates the need for physical stamp cards entirely.
🏷️

Consumer 04
Exclusive Offers & Deals
A dedicated offers page aggregates all current promotions from Maidah partner restaurants in one place — ranging from 2-for-1 deals to 50% off specific menu items to free drinks with a main course. These are exclusive to Maidah users: promotions not available anywhere else, negotiated by Maidah directly with partner restaurants. The offers page creates a strong habitual return behaviour — users open the app regularly to check for new deals, keeping engagement high between restaurant visits.
📲

Consumer 05
Push Notifications & Alerts
Personalised push notifications alert users to new restaurant partners, new offers from restaurants they’ve previously visited, rewards ready to redeem, and stamps approaching expiry. Notification personalisation is driven by each user’s loyalty wallet activity — a user who has visited Amigos five times receives Amigos-specific promotions, not generic platform-wide messages. This relevance is critical to maintaining notification opt-in rates and driving repeat visits.
📋

Consumer 06
Restaurant Profiles & Information Hub
Each partner restaurant has a dedicated in-app profile page covering: menu highlights, opening hours (with live open/closed status), halal certification details and caveats, current offers and loyalty card terms, Google Maps integration for turn-by-turn navigation, and Instagram-style food photography. These profiles give consumers everything they need to make a dining decision without leaving the app — reducing the friction between discovery and visit.

Restaurant Features

Seven Tools to Attract, Engage & Retain Customers

For restaurant partners, Maidah is not just a listing platform — it’s a complete customer acquisition and retention toolkit. Smitiv built the restaurant-facing side of the platform to give halal restaurant owners capabilities that would otherwise require multiple SaaS tools and a dedicated marketing team to replicate.

📍

Restaurant 01
Halal Restaurant Discovery Listing
Every partner restaurant is listed on London’s only dedicated halal restaurant discovery platform — surfaced to nearby consumers based on geo-location, cuisine preference, and halal status. Being listed on Maidah gives restaurants access to Muslim consumers who would otherwise be unreachable through generic platforms like Deliveroo or Just Eat, which do not surface halal-certified restaurants as a primary filter.
💳

Restaurant 02
Customisable Branded Loyalty Card
Each restaurant gets a fully customisable digital loyalty card within the Maidah app — branded with their logo, colours, and reward scheme. Restaurants define the number of stamps required per reward cycle and the reward itself (free item, discount, upgrade). The card is managed through a restaurant-facing dashboard and changes propagate to all user wallets instantly. This gives every restaurant the equivalent of a branded loyalty app without the development cost.
🏷️

Restaurant 03
Dedicated Offers Page Presence
Restaurants can create and manage exclusive offers that are surfaced on the Maidah offers page to the entire consumer user base. Offers are time-limited and restaurant-specific — creating urgency and driving new customer acquisition from the Maidah discovery pool. This is equivalent to a paid marketing channel, included as part of the Maidah partnership — giving restaurants a direct route to promote their best deals to an engaged, relevant audience.
🔔

Restaurant 04
Push Notification Marketing Channel
Partner restaurants can trigger targeted push notifications to their Maidah customer base — segmented to users who have previously visited and collected stamps. This creates a re-engagement channel that reaches customers in the context of a halal food discovery app, at a moment when they’re receptive to restaurant suggestions. Notifications can promote new menu items, limited-time offers, seasonal specials, or simply remind lapsed customers that their loyalty card is waiting.
🌟

Restaurant 05
Featured Restaurant Placement
A premium visibility tier that places restaurants at the top of the discovery feed and on the Maidah home screen — delivering maximum exposure to the consumer user base. Featured placement is particularly valuable for new restaurant partners during their launch period, or for established partners running major promotional campaigns. The featured mechanic drives significant new customer acquisition from the existing Maidah user base.
📊

Restaurant 06
Customer Engagement Dashboard
A restaurant-facing web dashboard that gives partners visibility into their Maidah performance: stamps collected by their customers, offers redeemed, loyalty card completion rates, and new customers acquired through the platform. This data helps restaurant owners understand which promotions are driving behaviour and optimise their Maidah presence accordingly — moving from guesswork to insight-driven decision making.
🗺️

Restaurant 07
Google Maps Integration & Information Management
Every restaurant profile includes live Google Maps integration — allowing consumers to get directions directly from the restaurant’s Maidah page. Opening hours, cuisine type, address, and halal certification details are all managed by the restaurant through their dashboard and displayed to consumers in real time. Accurate, up-to-date information reduces no-shows and disappointment visits, building consumer trust in Maidah as a reliable source of halal dining information.

Our Process

How Smitiv Built a Dual-Sided Marketplace

Building Maidah required a more complex architecture than a standard app project. A dual-sided marketplace needs two distinct product experiences — consumer and restaurant — that are deeply interlinked but independently functional. Smitiv approached this in carefully sequenced phases, ensuring neither side of the platform was launched before it could deliver value to the other.

Phase 01
Discovery — Understanding Both Sides of the Market
Discovery for Maidah was unusual — we needed to understand two entirely different user groups simultaneously. For consumers, we mapped the halal food discovery journey: how Muslim consumers currently find restaurants, what trust signals they rely on for halal verification, and where friction exists in the current experience. For restaurants, we mapped the operational reality: how do small halal restaurant owners currently manage loyalty, how digitally sophisticated are they, and what would they need to see from a platform before trusting it with their customers. This dual discovery produced a feature architecture that genuinely served both audiences from day one.
Dual Audience ResearchHalal Market AnalysisNFC Feasibility StudyCompetitor AuditFeature Architecture

Phase 02
Design — Cultural Authenticity Meets Consumer Delight
The Maidah design brief was specific: build something that feels genuinely made for the Muslim community, not a generic food app with a halal label. Every design decision — from the name’s Arabic etymology displayed prominently in the FAQ, to the emerald green colour palette (associated with Islam), to the “M” NFC button design — was considered through a cultural lens. The consumer UI prioritised ease of use at the restaurant table: large touch targets, clear stamp collection feedback, and minimal steps between opening the app and collecting a stamp. The restaurant dashboard was designed for non-technical business owners who needed to manage their presence without training.
Cultural Design ResearchConsumer UI/UXRestaurant Dashboard DesignNFC Interaction DesignBrand System

Phase 03
Platform Build — iOS, Android, Dashboard & NFC Infrastructure
The Maidah build was executed across four concurrent workstreams: the iOS consumer app, the Android consumer app, the restaurant management dashboard, and the NFC backend infrastructure. NFC integration required hardware-software co-engineering — the Maidah NFC device needed to be restaurant-specific, tamper-resistant, and capable of handling multiple simultaneous taps during peak dining periods. The loyalty engine was built to handle real-time stamp recording with offline fallback, ensuring stamps were never lost even in low-connectivity restaurant environments. Google Maps API integration was built into every restaurant profile. Push notification infrastructure was implemented with audience segmentation at the restaurant level.
iOS DevelopmentAndroid DevelopmentNFC Hardware IntegrationRestaurant DashboardGoogle Maps APIPush Notifications

Phase 04
Restaurant Onboarding — Building the Supply Side First
Before launching to consumers, Smitiv worked with Maidah’s team to onboard the initial restaurant partner cohort. This involved configuring each restaurant’s branded loyalty card, setting up their NFC devices, training their front-of-house staff on the tap mechanic, and populating their restaurant profile with verified halal status information, photography, opening hours, and initial offers. Launching with 50+ restaurants already active meant consumers who downloaded the app on day one found a fully stocked platform — avoiding the empty marketplace experience that kills consumer-side adoption in early-stage two-sided platforms.

Phase 05
Launch & Growth — App Store Live on iOS and Android
Maidah launched simultaneously on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store — achieving a 5/5 rating from its initial user base. The launch was supported by an active Instagram presence (@maidahapp) that drove consumer acquisition through viral food content, restaurant partnership announcements, and community-building campaigns. The Adjust attribution SDK was integrated for marketing performance tracking, enabling the Maidah team to measure which acquisition channels were driving the most valuable users. Post-launch, the platform has continued to grow its restaurant partner network and consumer user base across London.

What We Learned

Key Lessons from Building London’s First Halal Food Platform

Maidah taught Smitiv lessons about dual-sided marketplace development, culturally specific product design, and NFC hardware integration that now inform every similar project we take on. These are not theoretical insights — they came from solving real problems in a real market.

01
Launch With the Supply Side First — Always
In a two-sided marketplace, consumers will only return if there is enough value on the supply side waiting for them. We worked with Maidah’s team to onboard 50+ restaurant partners before the consumer-facing app launched publicly. This meant that the very first consumers to download the app found a fully stocked platform — dramatically improving early retention and generating the positive reviews that drove organic growth.
02
Cultural Authenticity is a Feature, Not Just Branding
The decision to name the app Maidah — with a clear explanation of its Arabic etymology — was not cosmetic. It signalled to the target community that this was built by people who understand and respect their culture, not a generic product seeking their business. The emerald green palette, the halal status filtering, and the culturally resonant name all contribute to the platform feeling genuinely made for Muslim consumers rather than adapted for them.
03
NFC Beats QR for In-Restaurant Loyalty
We considered a QR-based stamp collection mechanic early in the discovery phase. NFC was chosen instead — and this was the right call. NFC requires no camera permission, no framing or alignment, and completes in under one second. In a restaurant environment where customers are at a table or counter with limited time and attention, the tap-and-go experience dramatically outperforms QR scanning for adoption and satisfaction. The NFC investment was significant — but it became the platform’s most distinctive feature.
04
The Cold Start Problem Requires Deliberate Design
Every two-sided marketplace faces the question: which side do you build first? We solved it by treating restaurant onboarding as a product problem, not a sales problem. The restaurant dashboard was designed to be so simple that non-technical restaurant owners could self-serve their own setup with minimal guidance from Maidah’s team. This made onboarding scalable — and scaling the restaurant side quickly was the key to making the consumer side valuable from day one.
05
Rewards from Visit One Changes Adoption Behaviour
Maidah’s decision to make rewards available “from your very first visit” — rather than after 10 stamps or a long loyalty cycle — was a critical retention design choice. Users who receive value on their first interaction with a product return at dramatically higher rates than those who are told their reward is coming eventually. Every new Maidah user is on a reward journey from the moment they collect their first stamp.
06
Underserved Communities Create Exceptional Product Advocates
Muslim consumers in London had genuinely given up expecting a technology company to build something designed specifically for their halal food needs. When Maidah arrived and solved a problem they had accepted as permanent, the gratitude and enthusiasm in the early reviews was striking. Building for underserved communities creates the conditions for authentic word-of-mouth growth that no paid acquisition campaign can replicate.
